Built in 1452, the award-winning Angel Hotel is on one of the prettiest squares in the country, opposite the Abbey Gardens overlooking Angel Hill. The Angel Hotel offers traditional Georgian elegance and charm, mixed with modern design. The hotel offers 77 bedrooms, many featuring views of the Abbey Ruins and deep copper bath tubs.

The ground floor of the hotel, totally refurbished in 2019, offers plenty of guest areas to enjoy. The lounge, featuring a log fire, is the perfect setting to meet friends for coffee, enjoy a light lunch or indulge in afternoon tea. The bar, offering table service, overlooks Angel Hill and is the perfect place to enjoy a pre dinner drink. The Eaterie is open daily, serving breakfast, lunch & dinner. Booking is advisable, as Bury St Edmunds is known locally and beyond as the ‘foody capital of Suffolk’.

Our underground vaults date back to the 12th century, built using the same stone as the Abbey itself, with tunnels linking to the Abbey. Now, it offers a private dining space and is also home to many food & drink events such as our ‘Sunday Sessions’, ‘Friday Night Socials’ and ‘Steak Nights’.

The hotel has been visited by kings, queens, actors and writers. One such guest was Charles Dickens, our most famous former resident, stayed many times and mentions The Angel Hotel in The Pickwick Papers. Every room features bottled water as well as tea and coffee making facilities.

The Angel Hotel is in the town centre, located next to Abbeygate Street with plenty of shops open to browse. The hotel is within walking distance of Theatre Royal and The Apex for those with tickets to see a show, and a 15-20 minute walk from the train station.

The Angel Hotel also offers Valet Parking for an additional fee of £7.50 per 24 hours. On site parking is available on a first come, first served basis. Additional parking is available off site, however the hotel offers a dedicated concierge team to assist with car parking and a 24-hour front desk.

The hotel day starts from hour 15:00 and ends at 11:00.

Kindly note pets can only be accommodated in the Angel Classic rooms. You can use the Special Requests box when booking, or contact the property directly using the contact details provided in your confirmation.
